Abstract

Secondary title: Developing social skills in children with autism spectrum disorder using social stories
Secondary abstract: Typical signs of autism are characteristic problems in the area of social interaction, verbal and nonverbal communication and imagination. Common unwanted, problematic behaviour is usually connected with autism, the cause of which is misunderstanding of different situations a child with autism is faced with. There are several ways to teach social skills to children with the autism spectrum disorder, one of the most efficient being teaching with social stories. In this Master thesis 20 surveys, from the area of developing social skills through social stories in children with the autism spectrum disorder, have been critically evaluated. Our goal was to establish whether or not the interventions with social stories really proved to be efficient in developing social skills in children with the autism spectrum disorder. In 15 studies social stories had a positive and effective impact on all children and their behavior. In one study an intervention with social stories was successful for one in three children, in two studies for 2 out of 3 children, in two for 3 out of 4 children and in one study for 30 out of 45 children. Interventions with social stories have proven to be an effective method in developing social skills in children with autism spectrum disorder.
