magistrsko delo

Abstract

Delujejo žalostne, mistične in hkrati lepe. Izbrane fotografske serije omenjenih umetnikov so podrobneje predstavljene v magistrskem delu. Praktični del magistrskega dela zajema izdelavo fotografske knjige. Motiv knjige so zapuščene stavbe.

Secondary title: Photographic poetics of abandoned architectural structures
Secondary abstract: I have been drawn to photography and related aspects my entire life. When I was thinking about what to study in my master's thesis, I decided to examine the photography of abandoned buildings. Such buildings hide secrets within that we can no longer uncover, they remind us of forgotten events and life in the past. At the same time, they appear sad and mystical, but also beautiful. They create an aesthetical landscape, which I perceive as photogenic. In my master's thesis, I will therefore study such derelict architecture theoretically and empirically. This master's thesis is based on architectural photography, which will be addressed through artistic and wider aesthetic aspects. In other words, architectural photography will be studied as a metaphorical artistic figure rather than a tool to document or depict reality. Architectural photography can be perceived as an indexical medium, which tries to present a story to spectators, as photographers can convey a certain message or a narrative through photographs by applying a poetic visual language. Among influential artists who thematicize architecture following very different practices, we often come across works by Bernd and Hilla Becher, Eugène Atget, Hiroshi Sugimoto and Thomas Demand. The selected photographic series of these artists will be detailed in the master's thesis, along with the work by a Slovenian photographer, Damjan Gale. The main topic of this master's thesis, of both the theoretical and the empirical part, is addressing the idea of poetics, which is part of visual art. In addition to artistic elements that influence formal structure and variables that have an impact on phenomenological perception of photographic figures, I will study symbolism of the visible, which invites spectators to think about photographs and observe photographic scenes through the perspective of their own emotional and other experiences. I stem from the premise that poetics in a linguistic sense and photography can complement each other and that poetic visual language gives photography an emotional element. To further support this premise, I will present notions such as beautiful, sublime, subtle, mystical and melancholic. Certain photographs may be perceived not only as beautiful, but also as sad and frightening. They may evoke in us the feeling of coldness, timelessness, apathy and resignation. Furthermore, both poetry and photography are based on an image, which is either indexical or imaginary. In the empirical part, I will design a photobook, whose motive will be abandoned buildings. I will also present my poetry in the thesis and combine the visible image with the invisible one.
