Abstract

V empiričnem delu so predstavljeni rezultati raziskave.

Secondary title: THE THYROID DISEASE AND HEALTH CARE
Secondary abstract: The thesis deals with thyroid diseases. In the recent years, there have been an increased number of patients with thyroid dysfunctions. The incidence of disease is very high, but accurate epidemiological data for Slovenia on the prevalence and incidence is missing. The thesis consists of two parts. The theoretical part describes the thyroid gland, thyroid diseases, symptoms, the role of iodine in the function of the thyroid gland, the diagnostic methods, treatment, the role of the nurse advising patients with thyroid disorders, and the nursing care. The empirical part provides the results of the research. The research was based on the quantitative methodology where a structured questionnaire was used. It took place at the University Medical Centre Maribor in the nuclear medicine department in the unit for thyroid diseases. The research included 50 patients with a thyroid disease who visited the unit for thyroid diseases in the nuclear medicine department at the University Medical Centre Maribor. With the aid of the questionnaire, we have managed to obtain the answers to the previously asked questions. The purpose of the research was to determine the patients’ familiarity with thyroid diseases and where they have obtained the majority of information about the particular thyroid disease. We also wanted to know if the disease affects the relationships within the family and with friends, as well as what kind of difficulties accompanied the disease. It was determined that 96% patients were well familiarized with thyroid diseases, where the majority of patients (70%) gained most of the information from their doctor while others gained theirs from professional literary sources, internet, newspapers or magazines, and friends. 86% patients reported that the disease had not affected their family relationships, and 92% patients reported that the relationships with their friends had not been affected by the disease. Less than half (44%) of the patients have not reported any difficulties with the disease while others reported weariness, malaise, sweating, arrhythmia, sudden fever, nervousness, and increased body weight.
