Abstract

Secondary title: Health education of patients with heart failure
Secondary abstract: Coronary heart disease is still the leading cause of death in Slovenia and worldwide with heart failure being the major challenge to contemporary cardiology. In developed countries, the incidence of heart failure is on the increase due to population ageing and better treatment available. By educating the heart failure patients about their condition, we could prevent the disease from worsening, help them to adapt and come to terms with their situation as soon as possible and, last but not least, improve their chances of survival. With major improvements in healthcare, the patient's role is changing as well since everyone is now able to actively participate in their treatment. Therefore, improvement in health standards and implementation of such standards into practice is of vital importance for any future work. What is more, nursing standards represent the basis for health education in the patients with heart failure. Besides the structure, process and outcome standard, the health education standard also includes the content standard, providing lessons about a particular disease. It is also vital that the heart failure patients possess all the knowledge about their condition. With this in mind, a survey was carried out questioning the overall patient's knowledge on coronary heart disease. The survey concluded that the participants do not know enough about their condition and that it is of utter importance to provide proper health education within every cardiology ward.
