Abstract

Secondary title: The impact of the covid-19 epidemic on the state of the environment in the republic of slovenia
Secondary abstract: In March 2020, the first case of a new virus called SARS-Cov-2 appeared in Slovenia. At the time of the declaration of the epidemic, the Government of the Republic of Slovenia introduced various measures to limit the rapid spread. We were interested in how these introduced measures may have affected the air quality, so we compared the levels of individual pollutants in April 2019 and April 2020. We focused on traffic-related pollution. We found that the introduced measures have had a positive effect on air quality. They had lowered the levels of particulate matter PM2.5 and PM10, nitrogen dioxide, and nitrogen oxides. The highest difference was with benzene, as the value decreased by about 32.52%. Among the pollutants, ozone stood out, as its level in April 2020 was 10.21% higher than in April 2019. The result is understandable, as we know that ozone is an incredibly reactive gas and reacts quickly with CO to form nitrogen dioxide. Improvements in air quality during traffic restrictions had also been reported outside Slovenia.
