    Abstract
 
The CTD sensor captures measurements of conductivity, temperature and depth of the oceans. Scientists lack this data to discover unexplored areas of the oceans, as measuring systems and maintaining them are very expensive. The aim of this master's thesis is to produce a open source CTD sensor that will be cost-effective, accurate enough to make the data credible and attachable to a sea turtle. Through the thesis we learned about the theoretical background of processes in the oceans, reviewed the measurement methods for measuring conductivity, temperature and pressure. We made a circuit for measuring conductivity and measuring electrodes from graphite DC motor brushes. We validated all the sensors and finally assembled them into the first prototype of a CTD sensor.

            | Secondary abstract: | CTD senzor zajema meritve prevodnosti in temperature v odvisnosti od globine oceanov.  Znanstvenikom je na podlagi teh podatkov omogočeno veliko bolj kakovostno raziskovanje oceanografskih, vremenskih in okoljskih pojavov na Zemlji. Trenutno uporabljeni merilni sistemi in njihovo vzdrževanje predstavlja velik strošek za raziskovalne odprave. Prav tako visoka cena in neprimerna implementacija omejujeta količino zbranih podatkov. Cilj te magistrske naloge je izdelati odprtokodni CTD sledilnik, ki bo cenovno ugoden in dovolj natančen, da bodo podatki verodostojni. S tem bomo omogočili veliko širšo uporabov raziskovalni skupnosti, kar bo generiralo pomembne podatkovne baze za nadaljnje raziskave. Konstrukcija samega sledilnika mora biti čim bolj kompaktna, saj bo implementiran kot živalska sonda (»animal tag«), torej bo med delovanjem pritrjen na morsko želvo. Skozi nalogo smo spoznali teoretična ozadja procesov v oceanih, pregledali merilne metode za merjenje prevodnosti, temperature in tlaka. Izdelali smo vezje za merjenje prevodnosti in merilne elektrode iz grafitnih motornih ščetk. Validirali smo vse senzorje in jih na koncu integrirali v prvi prototip CTD sledilnika. |
