Abstract

Pridobljeni podatki so bili analizirani s statističnimi analizami.

Secondary title: Attitudes towards punishment: comparison of students of criminal justice and security in two time periods
Secondary abstract: The master’s thesis focuses on the views of students of criminal justice and security from the Faculty of Criminal Justice and Security, the University of Maribor. These students are possible future practitioners in criminal justice who may shape national future penal policy. The focus of the study was to examine whether students’ views on punishment have changed over time, more specifically for the past nine years. Part of the same questionnaire from the original study on young people’s views on punishment was used to implement the study. The data were collected through an online survey consisting of 83 items divided into six sets. The obtained data were analyzed by statistical analyses. The sample consisted of students of the Faculty of Criminal Justice and Security who completed an online survey (201 students). The survey was completed by 58 men and 143 women whose average age was 22.4 years. Of all the surveyed students, 124 attended undergraduate programs and 77 master’s programs. The statistical analyses showed that students are most supportive of retribution (retribution for a crime committed) followed by restitution (compensation for damages) and alternative sanctions. Differences between students’ views on punishment were identified regarding gender, level of study, and prior victimization. Female students were more supportive of alternative sanctions than male students. Undergraduate students were more prone to harsher punishment than postgraduate students. Previously victimized students were more supportive of restitution. In general, more than half of students have not advocated the death penalty. The findings showed that prior victimization affects some attitudes toward the death penalty. A comparison of our study with the 2011 study showed significant differences in students' views on punishment.
