Abstract

Secondary title: Poverty and social exclusion of the elderly in Slovenia and comparison with Ireland
Secondary abstract: Poverty and social exclusion are issues which are widespread throughout the world. Every country is fighting to help those at risk of poverty and social exclusion with the strategies they have adopted. The purpose of this diploma thesis is to investigate the areas of poverty and social exclusion of the elderly in Slovenia and Ireland in modern times, to present it in theory, and then show the key differences and similarities between Slovenia and Ireland in the level of poverty and social exclusion of the elderly. The aim of this thesis is to acquaint the reader with the situation of the elderly living in poverty in Slovenia and with social exclusion; with the meaning and definition of poverty and social exclusion; with the known forms of poverty; with how the level of poverty and social exclusion is measured; with how much they amount to in Slovenia; with whether measures have been taken to reduce poverty and social exclusion; and to compare all of this with Ireland and present it with statistical analyses. In the theoretical part of the thesis the descriptive method is used, which is largely used throughout the thesis. Statistical and comparative methods are used to test the hypotheses. In the practical part of the thesis a comparative method is used, as well as a statistical method. While writing the thesis it was determined that Slovenia has a higher share of the elderly population than Ireland; that the average age of the population in Slovenia is higher than in Ireland; that social transfers in Ireland reduce poverty more than in Slovenia; and that the level of material and social deprivation of the elderly aged over 65 is much higher in Slovenia than in Ireland.
