Abstract

Healthy relationships are not those with no conflicts, but one in which conflicts are successfully resolved. Police officers - in addition to the usual conflicts of common people - also face specific conflicts that arise precisely because their profession. These conflicts are varied: between work and family life, between expectations and reality, role conflict, political conflict, ethical conflict, the conflict in the exercise of powers. The correct response to conflict depends on personal style of coping with conflicts, but it is more important to build an organization that knows how to cope with conflicts than to transform the personalities of police officers. Such organizational measures are: clear hierarchy, clear responsibility, participation in change, the appropriate equipment. Management of some conflicts is defined by legal acts, for the other the solution depends on the ability of managers and individual police officers. To cope with the psychological conflicts there are the 24-hour intervention and the psychological support system of police representatives available. Police officers should be better trained in conflict management; particularly in tolerant communication and tolerant organizational culture. Some measures for managing conflicts are already available to police officers, some organizational support should be even better (mandatory psychological counseling, organizational changes). |
