Abstract

Secondary title: WOMEN'S AWARENESS OF CONTRACEPTION
Secondary abstract: Background: Nowadays birth control is accessible to almost every woman, and each of them can find a form of contraception that suits her. Contraception plays an important role in family planning, since it enables the partners to plan a child when they wish to have one. It is important that all women and men aware and well-informed about safe sex, the correct use of contraception and its effects on the body. Medical personnel, especially nurses, are the ones who raise awareness about contraception and present main sources of information for women visiting a gynecological clinic. In this thesis we describe methods of contraception, their positive and negative effects on the body, risk factors and the role of nurses in raising contraception awareness among women. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine women's awareness about contraception. We were also interested which contraception methods women most frequently choose, and from whom they get related information. Research Methodology: An anonymous questionnaire survey was conducted on a sample of 100 adult women of various ages. The research was conducted at the gynecological department in Ravne na Koroškem Health Centre. Acquired data was analyzed and presented descriptively and graphically. Results: Results showed that more than half of women (55 %) used contraception and adequate protection against pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases. Women are familiar with the positive and negative effects of contraception on the body. We also found that most women use the pill, those over 35 years of age prefer to use condoms and intrauterine, and some women are sterilized. Conclusion: The women are still under-informed about certain methods and means of contraception, further education would be advisable. Women of reproductive age should be more aware of the possible forms of contraception and new developments in this field.
