Abstract

Najbolj očitne sledi so podrta in poškodovana drevesa in grmi, kar je posledica prehranjevanja z lubjem, poganjki in listi.

Secondary title: Selective tree-felling by the European beaver (Castor fiber) during winter on Dravograd lake
Secondary abstract: Beaver (Castor fiber) has an ability to create habitats which makes this animal one of the most ecologically important rodents on Earth. In 2007, according to some sources already in 2006, its presence was noticed by Dravograd lake in Koroška. Beaver cuts down woody plants to feed on their bark, shoots and leaves. Beavers by Dravograd lake are poorly investigated therefore I decided to assess their tree preference during winter. The main task was to determine whether beaver is selective at tree-felling. If so, the proportion of cut trees would differ significantly from a tree species composition in beaver's habitat. I assessed the availability of tree's species on a sample of 1244 individual trees. The results showed that beavers choose more frequently than expected from random willows (Salix sp.), alder (Alnus sp.) and dogwood (Cornus sp.). Prefered were stems less than 10 cm in diameter (96 %), but this depended also on tree species. Thinner stems were selected at alder and dogwood but no preference was noticed for willows.
