Abstract

Secondary title: THE IMPORTANCE OF " SVIT" PROGRAMME
Secondary abstract: Background: Colorectal cancer is a very insidious disease as occurs with no obvious symptoms. That is why the national Programme SVIT was initiated in Slovenia in 2008. This programme enables discovering and further diagnostic evaluation of the disease which threatens the population between 50 and 69 years of age. Purpose: The purpose of diploma thesis is to present the importance of the early detection of precancerous lesions and colorectal cancer. Another aim is to determine an awareness of the target population about the Programme SVIT and their response to the programme's invitation. Research Methodology: In this diploma thesis we use the descriptive method. Data is gathered by a survey questionnaire. The study includes 100 randomly selected respondents aged from 50 to 69. All the respondents have the resident doctor in the Public Health Centre Šentjur (SW US Sentjur). Results: The results show that most of the surveyed population is familiar with the risk factors and the symptoms of colorectal cancer. The target population is aware of the aims and the functioning of the Programme SVIT. According to the results the response to the Programme SVIT's invitation in Šentjur is very high (85%), which is above the Slovenian average. Conclusion: The preventive action is of great importance for the prevention of colorectal cancer. This precautious action includes raising an awareness of the target population about the risk factors that cause the colorectal cancer and also about the symptoms which characterize the illness.
