Abstract

Secondary title: Initial difficulties in breastfeeding
Secondary abstract: Theoretical grounds: This diploma paper discusses initial problems that occur in breast-feeding. Breast-feeding is very important both for a newborn baby and its mother and is has many advantages for both of them. A mother's decision to breast-feed, which she makes during her pregnancy, encouragement and help of her partner and family all play a significant role. Initial breast-feeding problems take place with both the mother and the newborn. Nurses – midwives in a maternity hospital help a lot, when first placing a newborn to the mother's breasts. It is best for the baby to start suckling within the first 30 minutes after birth, as its suckling reflex is the strongest at that time. The purpose: The purpose of this diploma paper is to establish what problems may arise during breast-feeding both on the mother's and the newborn's side and to determine and define the counselling method and the assistance of the nurse. Methods: A study was carried out, involving a mother following 11 functional Marjory Gordon health patterns. The outcome: The study showed the mother experienced problems the second day after giving birth; her nipples were chapped and painful, later on a breast lump appeared. The newborn mostly had trouble over-sleeping, as he would sleep for over 4.5 hours and also experienced digestive problems – colic.
