Abstract

Secondary title: Understanding of idioms in a selected Grimm's fairy tale by frist and fifth grade pupils
Secondary abstract: Phraseology is the study of set or fixed expressions with its basic concept being idiom and its idiomatic meaning. In the narrower sense of phraseology, phraseological linguistic units are those whose meaning cannot be unravelled from its components, e. g. bookworm. In the broader sense, however, phraseological linguistic units are those whose full meaning equals the summarised meaning of its components, e. g. sleeping gown. Idioms are often found in contemporary adolescent literature. Younger children exhibit problems comprehending idioms, which does improve over stages of speech development. Nevertheless, the learning of idioms should be encouraged. Fairy tales offer the child an environment where one can learn about life and literary language as well as expand vocabulary. In the empirical section of the thesis, we wanted to explore how well first and fifth grade pupils understand idioms in a selected Grimm's fairy tale. We wanted to establish whether age, gender and idioms according to their classification influence a child's understanding of the latter. The survey involved twenty first and fifth grade pupils. With the method of semi-structured interview and analysis we learned that age significantly influences the understanding of idioms, namely older pupils were able to understand more idioms. Gender-wise boys were more successful. Generally speaking, nonetheless, pupils were better able to understand idioms which typically have a figurative meaning, as opposed to those, whose meaning can by no means be inferred from the words they consist of.
