Abstract

Secondary title: Counseling to parents about children's excessive sun exposure
Secondary abstract: Sun is the source of life on Earth. On one hand, moderate sun bathing is beneficial for human health, but on the other damaging when over exposed to sun rays. This diplomatic seminar is focused mainly on the important role a nurse plays in making parents aware of the danger their children face while being exposed to the Sun over extended periods of time. Describing the characteristics of children’s skin, presenting danger and consequences of over-exposure to the Sun and the most appropriate protection against it, are also goals of the seminar. In November 2011 we carried out an anonymous questionnaire, including 30 parents whose children attend the kindergarten Oton Župančič, unit Lenka in Maribor. According to the results of the analysis we discovered that parents are not completely aware of the consequences of UV - radiation on their children’s health. While they think the role of a nurse providing information is very important, they receive most of it from media. Parents positively evaluate health - education a nurse provides. We think health - education is very important and that pedagogues in kindergartens should cooperate with nurses more often in sense of advising parents and children about prevention and dangerous sun exposure.
