Abstract

Secondary title: Patient with kidney failure and treatment with hemodialysis
Secondary abstract: The emphasis in this diploma thesis lies on the haemodialysis, a replacement treatment which is essential for patients with chronic kidney failure. We have conducted an anonymous survey in the Dialysis Department in UKC Maribor. We have found that all of the patients do not stick to the strict diet and that they feel that the quality of their lives had not changed despite the completely new lifestyle. In the first part we have described the anatomic structure and function of kidneys. We have also introduced the diagnostics of kidney function, research by which we specify the kidney function and disease states that can lead to complete kidney failure. In the second part we have presented some other treatments of kidney failure, such as peritoneal dialysis and transplantation. We have described haemodialysis, for which a complete psychophysical preparation of the patient is needed. Furthermore, we have introduced possible complications of this treatment. We have also discussed some issues related to living with haemodialysis. We have emphasised the role of nurses, who are essential in the psychophysical treatment of the patient. They are also important as a consultant, which is especially important in the initial period of patient’s adaptation to the haemodialysis and the completely new lifestyle.
