Abstract

Secondary title: Risk Factors for Burnout Syndrome during the COVID-19 Pandemic in Nurses in Intensive Care Units
Secondary abstract: Introduction: The Coronavirus 19 (COVID-19) pandemic is set to sweep the globe in 2020. Healthcare staff were reaching both the mental and physical limits of their capacity. Nurses have been confronted with new challenges, especially in intensive care units. During this time, there was a high burnout among nurses in ICUs and other wards. The aim of this thesis is to investigate and present the risk factors for burnout syndrome in ICU nurses during a pandemic. Methods: The literature was collected from three international databases (PubMed, CINAHL, ScienceDirect). The descriptive method was used in the final work, and inclusion and exclusion criteria were taken into account. The search process is illustrated using a PRISMA-diagram. Results: Of the 319 peer-reviewed articles obtained, 15 are included in the analysis. The content analysis is presented in a table, using a synthesis table to show the common characteristics of the research. Discussion and conclusion: Most of the studies found an increase in burnout syndrome among ICU nurses during the COVID-19 pandemic. This was due to staff shortages, lack of supplies and protective equipment, and fear of infecting the home. The introduction of workplace programmes is important for the prevention of burnout, psychological support and relaxation techniques are crucial, as this could reduce the number of people affected.
