Secondary abstract: | Infrared spectroscopy is an established analytical method with a wide range of applications beyond the scope of chemistry. It is categorized as vibrational spectroscopy. Based on absorption of light with specific wavelengths, it is used in organic chemistry to identify functional groups present in a compound. In synthetic organic chemistry, it is used in combination with other methods for structure determination of organic compounds. With insight in theoretical backgrounds of infrared absorption we gain understanding of factors which influence position of absorption bands in the spectra. I have recorded infrared spectra of selected organic compounds and identified in their spectra the characteristic absorption peaks of functional groups. |
