magistrsko delo
Abstract

Secondary abstract: |
This master's thesis presents the idea of freedom in western Europe through time, focusing on the era of Renaissance, specifically between 1350 or 1400 and 1600. It focuses on how key social processes influenced the development of freedom. Furthermore, it discusses how freedom presented itself among various social classes and especially among different regions of Europe. The first section presents the beginnings of freedom as a concept and its development up until the late middle ages or the 14th century. It continues with descriptions of social shifts influenced by the environmental changes and natural disasters as well as economic changes and processes which were significant for the expansion of the idea. Next, the key thinkers of humanism and Reformation are presented, predominantly through the prism of understanding the meaning of freedom. Lastly, it deals with the importance of the New World and the rise of slavery for the idea of freedom. The development of the latter was a multi-layered process, which included immense divergence in the understanding of freedom. It had firm foundations in the previous historical periods, yet all the while having a major influence on the future. |
