Abstract

Secondary title: Differences between men`s and women`s prisons: Maribor Prison and Ig Prison
Secondary abstract: The difference between the sexes is present in everyday life. There is nothing different in criminality. In the bachelor's thesis, reviews the literature on gender differences in criminality and prisons. Despite the different needs, female offenders are often treated the same as male offenders. However it is paying more attention to this issue. The bachelor's thesis presents the differences between male and female prisons in theory and practice. All convicted persons can serve their sentences alternatively or in prisons. All prison staff and other experts, who try to rehabilitate and prepare prisoners for life outside the prison, play an important role in serving their sentences. Prison achieves its purpose of rehabilitation when convicts make the same decisions to change themselves for the better. The bachelor's thesis contains the results of structured interviews with employees of the Maribor Prison and the Ig Prison. The results of the interviews confirmed that the two institutions are similar in many areas and that there are not many differences between men's and women's prisons in Slovenia. The biggest difference would be that there is only one women's prison in Ig in Slovenia, where female convicts, detainees and minors are serving their sentences. There are fewer female convicts, so there is no need for an additional women's prison. However, there is a big problem in women's and men's institutions with spatial problems. Neither of the buildings have been designed for the purpose of a prison, so the desire for new institutions is big. Until then, inmates and prison staff must adapt to different situations appropriately.
