Abstract

TRANSPORT AND STORAGE OF NUCLEAR WASTE |
| Secondary abstract: |
Current available data show that the number of radioactive waste is increasing every year, and thus the number of transports of this waste. Several different factors are to blame for the increase. One of the factors is the higher consumption of radioactive substances in various industries and the resulting even greater amount of waste. Another reason, however, is the closure of certain nuclear power plants. However, all waste that is still on the site of the power plant must be taken to landfills. As elsewhere in the world, the consumption of radioactive substances is increasing in Slovenia and thus the generation of radioactive waste, but due to various processes, the amount of waste is decreasing annually. The problem that Slovenia is currently facing is the lack of space for storing this waste. Currently, two solutions are planned in Slovenia. The first solution is the construction of a dry storage facility next to the Krško nuclear power plant, where larger amounts of waste will be temporarily stored. Another more permanent solution is the planning of a silo-type landfill for the disposal of all radioactive waste generated in Slovenia. |
