Abstract

Secondary title: The Impact of Socioeconomic Status on Overweight Youth in Slovenia
Secondary abstract: In the diploma thesis, we studied the impact of socioeconomic status on youth overweight and obesity in Slovenia. The first, theoretical part of the thesis explains specific terms that were used throughout the thesis, followed by research findings regarding the prevalence of overweight and obesity in Slovenia, as well as all around the world. We continued with presentation of factors of this issue, one of them being the connection between socioeconomic status and overweight and obesity. The theoretical part is followed by the second, empirical part, within which the analysis was based on secondary data analysis, carried out with the help of a sample of Slovenian youth in the age group from 16 to 27 years. In order to obtain the most relevant data possible, we chose different variables – socioeconomic status in relation to mother’s and father’s education, as well as in relation to self-assessed family’s material situation. The differences in youth’s quality of life are conditioned by family’s socioeconomic status – their financial situation, as well as education and employment of the parents. We, therefore, analysed the assumption that young people, whose parents have better jobs and higher incomes, live a more quality and healthy life than those that come from financially weaker families.
