Abstract
Zato smo želeli z našo raziskavo preveriti, v kakšnem odnosu so omenjeni dejavniki: uporaba elektronskih naprav, spanje in učna zavzetost.

The use of electronic devices and their role in sleep and academic engagement of adolescents |
Secondary abstract: |
With the development of technology, there is an ever-increasing ownership and use of electronic devices, especially smartphones. The mentioned trend is particularly distinct among young people: the ever-increasing ownership and use is reported year after year. The use of electronic devices is associated with problems in the area of adolescent sleep, which is already subjected to many challenges due to biological changes, and with the area of learning performance, more specifically academic engagement. Therefore, with our research, we wanted to check the relationship between the mentioned factors: the use of electronic devices, sleep and academic engagement. We were interested in whether there are differences in sleep and academic engagement of individuals who use devices excessively or use them in the last hour before going to sleep, and we also focused on whether smartphone addiction is a predictor of sleep and academic engagement. We sought answers to the research question, if different aspects of sleep moderate the relationship between average time spent on a smartphone and academic engagement. We checked the assumptions on a sample of 531 students (78.2% female students) from various secondary schools in Slovenia, who were between 15 and 20 years old, and we used: three questions about the use of electronic devices that we composed ourselves, The Smartphone Addiction Scale-Short Version (SAS-SV) to obtain information about the risk of smartphone addiction, the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale-Student (UWES-S) to check the academic engagement of adolescents, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) to examine sleep and sleep outcomes. We found that girls report a higher risk of smartphone addiction and more frequent use, while boys show more frequent use of game consoles; that the average time spent on a smartphone and its use in the last hour before bedtime predicts smartphone addiction; that smartphone addiction is a predictor of academic engagement and sleep. We also came across the important realization that perceived sleep quality, daily disturbances and sleepiness during the day are moderators of the relationship between average time spent on a smartphone and academic engagement, which means that the mentioned dimensions of sleep additionally strengthen the relationship between average time spent on a smartphone and academic engagement. |
