Abstract

Secondary title: Youth participation in social movements on social media
Secondary abstract: Social media provide a participatory media environment based on the interactive Web 2.0 platform. This feature makes social media an effective tool for mobilizing young people to participate in social movements. The aim of this diploma thesis was to find out to what extent young people use different types of social media, whether they are aware of the social movements taking place on social media and if they are actively participating in them. We conducted an exploratory study using an online questionnaire. We analysed the results and found that most young people spend their everday time on social and media sharing networks. Despite the results showing the popularity of digital tools among young people, the majority of those do not use social media for civic participation and have a negative attitude towards it. The results we have obtained can be used as a basis for further research in the field of online youth activism
