Abstract

Fruit production methods and consumer habits during the covid-19 pandemic |
Secondary abstract: |
On March 12, 2020, Slovenia declared an epidemic due to the SARS-CoV2 coronavirus, which causes the respiratory disease coronavirus covid-19. After the outbreak of the epidemic, the way of life changed significantly; the fear of disease and the closure of shopping centers have brought changes to the carefree way of shopping for food. In 2021, we conducted a survey among 248 consumers from all over Slovenia, with which we checked their knowledge of fruit production methods and changes in their shopping habits during the covid-19 situation. The results of the survey showed that consumers have little knowledge of the differences between production systems; they are best acquainted with integrated and conventional methods of fruit production (60% and 52% knowledge respectively), and with other methods such as organic, biodynamic, "0.0 MRL" and "low-input" less well (knowledge below 46%) . Consumers' knowledge of production methods is not related to their age, except for the conventional method, where it was mostly recognized by consumers over 30 years old. Gender and place of residence (rural or urban area) had no influence on knowledge of cropping systems. Regarding the shopping habits of consumers during the covid-19 situation, 44.4% of respondents stated that they visited stores less often during the pandemic; 21.5% preferred to buy groceries online. During the covid-19 pandemic, consumers decided to buy packaged food somewhat more often. |
