Abstract

Secondary title: The role of empathy in the influence of a romantic partner's support on pain
Secondary abstract: Researchers in the field of affective neuroscience are currently focusing a lot on studying the positive effects of social regulation - a psychological mechanism in which an individual in a stressful situation reduces discomfort with the help of social support. It can be a means of reducing the intensity of unpleasant feelings, such as negative emotions or physical pain. Recent psychological researches also emphasize the contribution of empathy to the social regulation of emotions and pain. The purpose of this master's thesis was to determine whether partner's support affects the participant's experience of pain and what role the partner's empathy plays in this. In a sample of 10 romantic couples who participated in an experimental study, it was found that the unpleasantness of the participants' pain decreased when their romantic partner was present. The results also showed that the partner's general empathy level does not play a role in the effect of his support on his partner's experience of pain, nor do affective and cognitive empathy as separate constructs play a significant role in this. Our findings support the idea that social support from a romantic partner can act as an economical natural analgesic. However, the results of our study and other current studies in this area suggest that other factors may be more crucial than empathy for the effective social regulation of pain by a romantic partner.
