Abstract

Secondary title: Intrusions into cryptocurrency exchanges
Secondary abstract: This study investigates breaches into cryptocurrency exchanges, the attackers' methods, and how cryptocurrency exchanges should protect their assets. With the rising popularity of cryptocurrencies and the need to trade them, exchanges also saw a significant uptick in usage. That also attracts hackers and other mischievous groups to exploit and steal. Billions of dollars were stolen from decentralized and centralized exchanges, with few repercussions for the attackers. Some infamous cases of breaches include Mt. Gox, where 850.000 Bitcoins were stolen, and the cryptocurrency exchange Bitfinex suffered the loss of 120.000 Bitcoins. Both breaches have a combined worth of 20 billion American dollars at the time of writing. We have found that most cryptocurrency exchanges prioritize marketing and scaling the business, and worry about the security factors of their business later, which is one of the main reasons that the payout can be so lucrative for the attackers. There are also a lot of cases of mismanagement of funds, inside jobs, and poor security decisions where businesses and everyday people lose their savings and investments. With the help of research papers, websites, and articles, we have examined the most common ways that the exchanges get hacked and provided security solutions that they can use to protect themselves from attacks and loss of funds.
