Abstract

Secondary title: Ontogenetic variability of the mandible of the common hamster, Cricetus cricetus (Linnaeus, 1758)
Secondary abstract: In this masters thesis we studied the ontogenetic development of the mandible of the common hamster Cricetus cricetus (Linnaeus, 1758). Using geometric morphometrics, we analysed 123 hemimandibles from the lingual side, on which we determined 16 landmarks. We compared differences in size and shape between the sexes and age classes. The mandible of the researched specimens grew whole lifetime. The growth was most intense until the 60th day of age. The mandible grew until the 200th day of age, then growth slowed down but it did not stop. We confirmed that males have larger mandibles. The differences emerged on the 120th day and lasted until the 4th year of age. In this age group, the differences were not statistically significant. We confirmed sexual dimorphism in the shape both at the age of 40 and 150 days as well as in 2nd and 3rd year of age. We confirmed that changes in the mandilble shape ocurred during the ontogenetic development. The most notable difference was between the youngest specimens that were less than 30 days old and the oldest specimens that were 4 years old. The most prominent changes during the ontogenetic development were observed in the thickening of the ramus and processes as well as in the rise of molars. The mandible grew allometrically during ontogenetic development. Certain parts grew faster, which preserved their functionality. Changes in shape were crucial during the transition from sucking to independent feeding.
