diplomsko delo univerzitetnega študijskega programa Varstvoslovje
Abstract

Bipolar disorder and its relation to criminal offences |
Secondary abstract: |
People who live with mental health problems can face stigma, discrimination and social exclusion, which has a significant impact on their lives. Misconceptions about the relationship between mental health, mental illness and violence contribute significantly to these experiences. Studies have shown that people who live with mental health problems do not tend to violent behavior more than the general population, although public perception, often influenced by the media, contributes to attitudes that significantly affect the lives of these people.
Mood disorder is a mental health condition that primarily affects one's emotions. It is a disorder in which people experience long periods of extreme happiness, extreme sadness, or both. Some mood disorders include other persistent emotions such as anger and irritability. One of them is bipolar disorder, which is discussed in the thesis. It is a mental illness that causes dramatic changes in one's mood, energy, and ability to think clearly. People with bipolar disorder alternate between periods of happy, euphoric, and bad, depressed moods – known as mania and depression – that are different from the typical ups and downs experienced by most people.
The thesis starts with a definition of mental disorders and mood disorders. The central part presents a general description of bipolar mood disorder, which continues with the presentation of the consequences of the disease. Finally, crimes are discussed and it is shown how patients with bipolar disorder relate to them and how the criminal justice system treats them.
The relationship between mental illness and violence is complex and the latter is not a symptom of psychotic illnesses. Research shows that there is little connection between the two if substance use is not included. As shown below, if patients are properly treated and receive effective treatment, and do not abuse drugs and alcohol, they will not show signs of aggressive and dangerous behavior. They are more likely to hurt themselves. |
