vzroki in posledice

Abstract

Secondary title: Russian-Ukrainian conflict: causes and consequences
Secondary abstract: Russia invaded Ukraine on 24 February 2022, but the war had already started to some extent long before the invasion. Relations began to deteriorate in 2014, but the causes of the conflict date a long way back, due to the two countries' shared history in the Soviet Union. In March 2021, Russia thus started a large-scale military build-up of troops and equipment along its border with Ukraine. Despite these developments, various Russian government officials denied plans to invade Ukraine until the day before the invasion. On 21 February 2022, Russia recognised the People's Republic of Donetsk and the People's Republic of Lugansk, two self-proclaimed breakaway states in the Donbas, and the following day the Russian Federation Council authorised the use of military force and Russian troops entered both territories. The invasion began on the morning of 24 February, when Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a special military operation to demilitarise and denationalise Ukraine. In this thesis, we summarise the events leading up to Russia's actual attack on Ukraine in 2022, while showing the potential causes that led to the invasion and the consequences of the war in different areas. The war in Ukraine has caused, among other things, tens of thousands of deaths on both sides and the biggest refugee crisis in Europe since the Second World War. It has also led to global food shortages and many other consequences, which are described in detail in the thesis.
