Abstract

Secondary title: PRE-PERFORMANCE ANXIETY AMONG MUSICIANS
Secondary abstract: Stage fright is a modern phenomenon, which occurs frequently with students in primary school. Nervousness is an unpleasant nervous tension, an agitation which usually appears before public performance. This thesis represents scientific discoveries about nervousness. The aim of the research was to find out the presence of nervousness among children and how they confront with it. Furthermore, we have concentrated on causes, positive and negative effects and techniques for reducing physiological agitation and its symptoms. In the theoretical part we have concentrated on the basic terms and scientific discoveries in the field of nervousness, which represented the basics of the empirical part. In the empirical part the results of the research are presented. The study was carried out on a music school in Gornja Radgona. The research involved 88 students which were in fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth grade. The main purpose of the research was to study nervousness of the students before music performance in order to find out the difference between boys and girls. Our results show that nervousness is constantly present when students have a music performance. Most of the fear occurs before they step on-stage, and it usually goes away after their public appearance. However, students are more nervous when they have to sing more difficult songs and when they perform in front of a large audience. Competition is a special type of performance when students feel strong physiological agitation, which results in faster heart beats. In comparison to boys, girls are more nervous before they go on stage, which is why they feel stage fright more often than boys. The results obtained with the survey show also, that the closer the time comes to stepping onto the stage, most of the students go to their teachers because they need an advice how to overcome performance anxiety. Personally, we think that teachers need further education about the influence of stage fright on music performance.
