magistrsko delo
Abstract

Physical activity, sedentary behaviour and students' academic achievements |

The aim of our research was to examine the links between physical activity, sedentary behaviour and students' academic achievements. 105 students of the University of Maribor were included in the research, of which 29 (27.6%) were in the 2nd year, 15 (14.3%) were in the 3rd year, 23 (21.9%) were in the 4th year Bachelor Degree students and 38 (36.2%) of 1st-year Master's Degree students. The level of physical activity of students was determined using the standardized IPAQ physical activity questionnaire, which we adapted for the student population and emergency situations related to COVID-19. With the help of the standardized questionnaire SIT-Q-7d, we determined the time that students spend sedentary. Through an online survey, with the help of the 1ka program, we obtained the data necessary for the research, which we analyzed with the computer program SPSS 27. First, we calculated basic statistical indicators, then we calculated whether there were differences between groups using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA). Statistically significant differences were determined at the risk level of p < 0.05. We found that there is no statistically significant difference between the level of physical activity of the students and their average grade, nor are there any differences in the relationship between individual academic years and the amount of moderate to high physical activity. Although we predicted a physical activity decline in higher years, it turned out that, despite of the fact that the second year is the most active on average, the predicted decline in physical activity does not occur in higher years. We found that students spend most of their time sitting, namely at the faculty or during distance learning, to fulfill study obligations (outside of lectures and exercises) and while using devices with screens. With such a sedentary lifestyle, it is particularly important that students adhere to the physical activity guidelines for adults, as regular physical activity is one of the most crucial factors in preventing disease and maintaining overall health. |
