Secondary title: | Pit construction of antlion larva Euroleon nostras (Neuroptera: Myrmeleontidae) according to different grain size of sand |
Secondary abstract: | We observed and analyzed pit construction of antlion Euroleon nostras in sands with different grain sizes. Larvae of the antlion were placed in four different sands. The particle sizes used in the research were the following: 60-110 %m, % 540 %m, 1000-1540 %m and 1540-1750 %m. Antlions were particularly active in the late afternoon and in the evening. During that time, we recorded pit construction with a video-camera and took notes of the process. Antlions did not build pits in the coarsest sand. We recorded stages of pit construction and duration of the stages. The results support a suggestion that certain plasticity occurs in antlion behaviour. |
