Abstract

V prvem delu smo predstavili problematiko prevajanja vsakega področja.

Secondary abstract: In comparing Agatha Christie's original novel The ABC Murders with its Slovene translation Umori po abecedi, translated by Breda Konte, various translation shifts were encountered. In the diploma paper particular emphasis is given to translation shifts on the lexical level, in addition to translations of foreign words and omissions. The diploma paper consists of two parts: the theoretical and the empirical part. In the first part, the translation difficulties of each sub-category are presented. The study also analyses existing knowledge regarding lexical variation, foreign words and omissions in translation studies. In the theoretical part the examples are analysed with the help of Kitty van Leuven-Zwart's model for analysis of prose translations. Each sub-category includes a detailed analysis of select examples as well as new translation suggestions. The study also describes the effect of these translation shifts on the reader's perception of the novel. It was concluded that translation shifts always make the target text stylistically different compared to the original, regardless of their extent. This does not mean that a particular translation is not good; it is only that the "same" content is expressed differently.
