Abstract

Secondary title: Craft and trade in Roman Empire
Secondary abstract: Because of the favourable climate Italy has always been an attractive country for new inhabitants. The first inhabitants that significantly influenced the cultural and political development of the Apennine Peninsula were the Etruscans, who lived north of the Tiberis. On the south side of the peninsula the Greeks controlled maritime affairs and trade. After 600 BC they started to push the Etruscans out. In the 8th century BC the city of Rome was founded. During the millenium of its existence Rome became the largest empire of its time. In diploma the most important industry branches of the Roman Empire were investigated as well as the importance of the road network, which Romans persistently expanded also into the provinces, the value of the provinces and the Slovene territory and why the western part of the Roman Empire collapsed at last.
