Abstract

Kodiranje podatkov ni samo moderna stvar. S težavo varnega prenosa podatkov se je že ubadal rimski general Cezar, ki je z preprosto zamenjavo črk izumil enega izmed prvih kodirnih algoritmov. Danes so algoritmi kompleksnejši, saj morajo kodirati večje število podatkov, zato se je uveljavilo celotno področje razvijanja in optimiziranja kodirnikov. V tem diplomskem delu smo raziskali varnost in učinkovitost osmih simetričnih kodirnikov. Izdelali smo program, ki meri hitrost in zmogljivost na štirih bločnih (AES, RC6, ARIA, IDEA) in štirih pretočnih (Salsa(8/12/20), ChaCha(8/12/20), Rabbit(withIV/noIV), HC128/256) simetričnih kodirnikih. Analiza teorije in rezultatov meritev, je potrdila višjo hitrost pretočnih kodirnikov ter da imajo bločni in pretočni kodirniki primerljivo stopnjo varnosti, kadar delujejo v njihovi najoptimalnejši konfiguraciji.

Secondary title: Comparing the effectivnes and security of symmetric ciphers in C++
Secondary abstract: Data encoding is not just a modern phenomenon. The problem of secure data transmission was already tackled by the ancient Roman general Ceasar, who invented one of the first coding algorithms by simply replacing letters. Today however are algorithms much more complex as they have to encode a larger amount of data in a shorter time frame, which is why an entire field of study is dedicated to development and optimisation of ciphers. In this thesis we investigated the security and efficiency of eight symmetric ciphers. More specifically, we made a program that measures the speed and performance of four block (AES, RC6, ARIA, IDEA) and four stream (Salsa(8/12/20), ChaCha(8/12/20), Rabbit(withIV/noIV), HC128/256) symmetric ciphers. Our analysis of the theory and measurement results confirmed the higher speed of stream ciphers and stream encoders have a comparable level of security when operating in their most optimal configuration.
