Abstract

CIRCADIAN VERTIKAL MIGRATIONS OF PHALANGIUM OPILIO IN AN ABANDONED PASTURE |
| Secondary abstract: |
From July till October 2009 we observed nictephemeral vertical migrations in the harvestman Phalangium opilio Linnaeus, 1758, on an abandoned meadow in the locality of Tratna ob Voglajni. According to the vegetation records in the area, and referring to the typology of habitat types in Slovenia, the meadow ranks in the category of central European xero-mesophile low-lying grasslands on a relatively dry ground and inclined surfaces with predominantly tall oat-grass. We were interested in which height place individuals themselves on plants within 24-hour cycle, when they become active, and when they cease their activities, and if their nictephemeral dynamics depends on temperature and humidity. At the resting place of each sexed individual, we determined its morphotype, and measured the height of its placement on a plant, temperature, humidity and insiolation. We have confirmed the hypothesis that in the evening when the relative humidity is high, individuals are mostly present higher on the plants. We have also confirmed that the activity of individuals is strongly related to temperature and humidity, and that individuals migrate vertically within 24 hours. Further on, we confirmed that different individuals of morphotypes do not differ with respect to their 24-hours activities, and that large-horned males differ significantly from the small-horned ones with respect to the environmental factors. However, we did not confirm that, in the morning when the relative humidity is high, individuals rest higher on the plants, and in the afternoon when the relative humidity is low, they residence lower on the plants. |
