Abstract

The theoretical part of the diploma paper deals with the subject of bilingualism, code switching, language change, borrowing, language contact and the cultural situation of Slovene Americans or their descendants in the United States of America. I wanted to find out where the first immigrants learned English and whether it was difficult to learn it. Furthermore I was interested in who in the participants' families still speaks Slovene; in which daily situations they use Slovene and with whom they speak Slovene. Afterwards I focused on preservation of contacts between them and their Slovene relatives. I wanted to find out whether the participants watch Slovene TV programs, read Slovene newspapers or visit Slovene websites. Lastly, I questioned about the future of the Slovene language in the USA in years to come. The empirical part was carried out with the help of an online questionnaire. Despite the greater influence of English, I could determine that Slovene Americans or their descendants still occasionally use the Slovene language while talking to their family members, friends or neighbors. The results of the survey show that many participants believe that Slovene will probably not survive in the United States. On the other hand, there are Slovene Americans who want to preserve the Slovene language by keeping in touch with their Slovene relatives, attending social events, reading Slovene newspapers or visiting Slovene websites.

Secondary abstract: V diplomskem delu je obravnavana tematika dvojezičnosti, kodnega preklapljanja, jezikovnih sprememb, sposojenk, jezikovnega stika ter tematika Ameriških Slovencev oziroma njihovih potomcev v Združenih državah Amerike. Želela sem ugotoviti, kje so se prvi slovenski priseljenci naučili angleščine ter ali se jim je bilo težko naučiti nov jezik. Nadalje sem hotela ugotoviti, kateri člani družin anketirancev še vedno govorijo slovenski jezik, v kakšnih vsakodnevnih situacijah ga uporabljajo ter s kom se pogovarjajo v slovenskem jeziku. Nato me je zanimalo, ali ohranjajo stike s slovenskimi sorodniki. Želela sem ugotoviti, ali anketiranci gledajo slovenske TV programe, berejo slovenske časopise oziroma obiskujejo slovenske internetne strani. Kot zadnje sem povprašala, kakšno prihodnost napovedujejo slovenskemu jeziku v ZDA. Empirični del je bil izveden s pomočjo spletnega vprašalnika. Ugotovila sem, da kljub velikemu vplivu angleškega jezika, ameriški Slovenci oziroma njihovi potomci še vedno občasno uporabljajo slovenski jezik v pogovorih s člani družine, prijatelji ter sosedi. Rezultati raziskave kažejo, da mnogi anketiranci menijo, da se slovenski jezik v Združenih državah Amerike verjetno ne bo ohranil. Na drugi strani pa imamo ameriške Slovence, ki želijo ohraniti slovenski jezik, tako da ostajajo v stikih s slovenskimi sorodniki, obiskujejo družabne prireditve, berejo slovenske časopise in obiskujejo slovenske internetne stran.
