Abstract

Secondary title: The problem of drug addiction in prisons
Secondary abstract: Addiction to illegal drugs is a pressing problem in today's society, as it has many negative effects, both on the individual who is addicted to illicit drugs and on other people as well. Prohibited drugs are closely related to crime and, as a result, to prisons, where many people have problems due to the use of illegal drugs. In the diploma thesis, we present the problem of addiction to illicit drugs in prisons, especially the challenges faced by addicts and users of illicit drugs and, as a result, other prisoners. We specifically focus on the problem of addiction to illicit drugs in Slovenian prisons. Findings show that people addicted to illegal drugs or who have problems due to the use of illicit drugs are exposed to greater health risks, violence and fights during imprisonment. An analysis of the number of addicts or persons who have problems with the consumption of illegal drugs in Slovenian prisons in the period between 2000 and 2021 showed that the number is increasing. Thus, the number of prisoners on substitution therapy is also increasing in Slovenian prisons. An analysis of the amount of illegal drugs found in Slovenian prisons indicates that this is changing in the period from 2000 to 2021, since in 2013, larger amounts of synthetic drugs began to appear.
