Abstract

Secondary title: Foot Placement During Walking in Preschool Period
Secondary abstract: The purpose of my diploma thesis was to establish foot placement in preschool period. In the theoretical part I presented walking and the role of feet in walking. In the continuation I described stages of capability from 12 months to 5 years. In the continuation I explained the anatomy of feet that includes the skin, muscles and ligaments, veins and nervous system, feet joint, and bones. The description continues with the foot development from birth to the beginning of school, as well as innate and obtained foot deformities. In my thesis I described normal foot development, as well as feet with a low arches, normal arches, and high arched feet. I also described the characteristics of children's footwear; sole, heel, and upper part of the shoe. I also integrated specifying and adequacy of children's shoes and what should be taken into account when buying children's footwear. Specifying adequacy and size of the shoe in the first year of life, as well as orthopedic shoes, are also presented in my thesis. In the empirical part I presented the results of my research that I carried out to establish foot placement during walking in preschool period. I executed my research in December 2010 and I integrated fifty children of different ages from Radlje ob Dravi kindergarten. The results have shown that there are no statistical differences in walking and foot placement with preschool children. Children have normally developed feet, and to maintain normal development, we should not use too small or too tight shoes that could restrict movement of toes.
