magistrsko delo

Abstract

Secondary title: Conceptual design of a residential community for the elderly in Štepanjsko naselje in Ljubljana
Secondary abstract: The master’s thesis addresses the issue of designing a primary environment for the living and work of the elderly active population. It relies on three important premises: 1. Life expectancy is increasing, and the possibility of fulfilling individual needs is increasingly proven in quality community living. 2. In modern society, more and more elderly individuals remain alone in large homes. Following the English word, the Slovenian language has coined the term “samovalec” to describe such individuals. The task of society is to provide the elderly with the highest quality of living and a sense that they are also an indispensable part of society. 3. In the past, cultural and cooperative centres represented the core of social gatherings, which is disappearing in modern times. The proposed community of active seniors enables intergenerational connections between neighbours. As elderly individuals enter their senior years, their lifestyle undergoes significant changes. This often coincides with moving to nursing homes that are not adapted to still active individuals but can even resemble a hospital where the elderly find it difficult to find meaning and joy in life. The master’s thesis presents a new, alternative view of the elderly and their desires, hobbies, and lifestyle. We aim to create an environment that will allow a more natural transition into old age and will be less stressful for the elderly, while also allowing them to remain useful in their home and maintain their vitality by continuing to live an active life. Through architecture, it is necessary to encourage activity and community involvement while also enabling each individual to decorate and transform their home according to their wishes. The key principle of the master’s thesis is: “Help me do it myself!”
