Abstract

Animal welfare assessments on dairy cow farms |
Secondary abstract: |
In dairy cows, there are many problems and challenges related to animal welfare. A prerequisite for changes and progress is an effective evaluation system. Different protocols have been developed in the past, but all of them have shortcomings that hinder their wider use in the practice. In the present research, Welfare Monitor protocol was applied to assess the welfare of free-stall dairy cows. The Welfare Monitor protocol is a simplified and faster version of the Welfare Quality® protocol, as some animal-based measurements are replaced by resource-, pen- and management-based measurements. It covers the principles of feeding, housing, health and behaviour. Each principle is divided into 12 criteria, which are verified by measures on the farm. The described procedure was carried out on 10 farms with free-stall rearing of dairy herd of various sizes (16-90 dairy cows). Measures obtained on the farms (approx. 30) were used to calculate criteria scores, which were used to calculate principles score, based on which the farms obtained overall assessment (not classified, acceptable, enhanced, excellent). Although the farms differed considerably in criteria and principle scores, nine of them were classified as enhanced and one as acceptable. The results obtained for dairy farms in Slovenia are encouraging. However, there are still many possibilities for improvement of breeding conditions, which differ from farm to farm. It would be advisable to make adjustments and changes on the farms based on the obtained results, and over time to re-check the animal welfare state of the dairy cows |
