Abstract

Secondary title: Sustainable development in Formula 1
Secondary abstract: In the diploma thesis, we delved deep into the strategy of sustainable development of Formula 1. The motorsport competition has faced criticism from environmentalists for years, and as a result has published initiatives aimed at reducing its carbon emissions. Many have marked this decision an attempt at greenwashing – an approach by a company that gives the appearance of sustainability but actually does little to reduce the amount of emissions it produces. We looked at Formula 1's initiatives such as the development of sustainable fuels, powering all business facilities with alternative energy and reshaping the logistics processes, analysed what they would mean for the wider car market and how they would affect the emissions produced by Formula 1. We concluded that these initiatives would largely reduce carbon emissions, but the strategy has many shortcomings. The main shortcomings are lack of transparency of the strategy and its progress, and Formula 1's ongoing partnerships with oil companies and Middle Eastern countries.
