magistrsko delo
Abstract

The effect of a gratitude intervention on well-being, stress and anxiety |
Secondary abstract: |
In everyday challenges of life, people sometimes forget how many good things we have and how grateful we can be for them. The aim of this master’s thesis was to study if a two-week gratitude intervention can have an effect on improving well-being and lowering stress and anxiety. I was interested in whether there would be statistically significant changes in well-being or its components (positive affect, negative affect, life satisfaction and psychological well-being) after the gratitude intervention in experimental group. I was also curious if there would be statistically significant changes in this group in variables gratitude, anxiety and stress. I wanted to find out if the results of experimental group would be statistically significantly different two weeks after the intervention, compared to results before the intervention and if right after the intervention and two weeks later, there would be statistically significant changes between experimental and control group. I performed a two-week intervention in which individuals had to write three good things that have happened to them that day. There were 83 participants in the research (76 identified as female and 7 as male), from which 41 were in experimental group and 42 in control. Before the intervention started, right after it and two weeks later, all of the participants had to fill out the questionnaire, with which we checked their well-being, anxiety, stress and gratitude. The measures used were The Satisfaction with Life Scale, Ryff’s Scales of Psychological Well-Being, Positive Affect Negative Affect Schedule, Depression, Anxiety, Stress Scale – DASS 21 and The Gratitude Questionnaire-Six Item Form. For analyzing the results, I used T-tests for related and independent samples and its two non-parametric alternatives Wilcoxon Signed Ranks Test and Mann-Whitney U test. The results showed statistically significant decrease on scales for anxiety, stress and VI negative affect, in experimental group, right after the intervention. This effect remained two weeks after the intervention. At this point there was also a significant effect on the variable psychological well-being. With other variables, life satisfaction and positive affect, there were no statistically significant changes and there were also no significant changes between experimental and control group, both right after the intervention and two weeks later. With this study, we showed that a short gratitude intervention can have statistically significant effects on lowering stress, anxiety and negative affect. It can also influence the improvement of psychological well-being. It can serve as a basis for using this intervention in the future and as a starting point for future research in Slovenia in the field of positive psychology and gratitude. |
