Abstract

Secondary title: Container shipment logistics during the covid-19 pandemic at DHL Global Forwarding
Secondary abstract: Container shipment logistics is a complex system that optimizes the movement of goods using standardized containers from the beginning to the end of the supply chain, all while meeting customer demands. The COVID-19 pandemic has exposed vulnerabilities within supply chains, presenting us with the challenge of rapidly adapting to the situation. These swift changes have disrupted maritime freight transportation, leading to significant declines in the import and export of goods worldwide. This thesis focuses on the role of a freight forwarder during the COVID-19 pandemic. We emphasize the importance of proper documentation, included clauses, suitable equipment, and delve into a specific case of a shipment organized by the company during the pandemic, addressing the challenges that arose in this unique situation. We describe the entire process of organizing a shipment that traveled from Celje to Ho Chi Minh City. Despite facing numerous challenges during the organization due to pandemic-related measures, the most significant issues stemmed from delays in ship departures, resulting in considerable changes and challenges in the organization process. Despite these obstacles, the company responded decisively and swiftly, implementing new solutions to ensure uninterrupted operations. First and foremost, they had to prioritize the safety and health of their employees, providing protective masks and sanitizers while enabling remote work to prevent the potential spread of the virus. After establishing safe working conditions, they tackled the challenges that emerged in organizing the transport of shipments. While they couldn't influence ship delays, they successfully tracked their movements using the VesselFinder program, allowing for the prediction of their arrival and precise monitoring of subsequent processes. Additionally, they faced issues related to equipment shortages and drivers, leading them to reuse the same containers multiple times or even pick them up in different ports to address these challenges.
