diplomsko delo univerzitetnega študijskega programa Varstvoslovje
Abstract

Serial killer incidence throughout history |
Secondary abstract: |
At the beginning of the thesis, a brief description of the definition of serial killers, their characteristics, and a short overview of their history is provided. Furthermore, categorization is discussed, and it is noted that there are several different typologies, but none are scientifically confirmed. In addition to typology, factors contributing to the development of serial killers are also addressed. These factors can be of both biological nature (genetic predisposition or brain injuries) and psychosocial nature (childhood trauma). An attempt is also made to briefly answer whether serial killers are born or raised, where it is found that potential serial killers are born, but their development depends on upbringing and the environment in which they grow up.
As our focus was on the prevalence of serial killers, in the second part of the thesis, a continental overview is presented. It is observed that the number of identified serial killers depends on the development of law enforcement agencies and the media – the more developed the country or continent, the more data is available about the number of serial killers. Finally, the influence of the media on serial killers is discussed, where it is found that the media and serial killers operate symbiotically. The media's popularity depends on the portrayal of these killers, as they attract the audience's attention, while serial killers gain their own identity through media exposure. |
