Abstract

Secondary abstract: The thesis entitled "Poker Jargon" is a sociolinguistic study which deals with jargon as type of language and, in particular, a specific type of jargon, i.e. the jargon of poker players. In the thesis, the author first defines jargon as a specific language variety with distinctive characteristics, and presents and confronts views on jargon language from several domestic and foreign authors. He examines causes of jargonisms and stresses the need for naming new concepts, as well as the tendency to univerbisation of multiword expressions. The author then addresses the function of jargon in communication between its users which he sees in the need for professional communication in a certain activity, as well as in the drive for expressing group belonging. Also, the author attempts to define the basic lexical features of jargon which are, primarily, the large number of borrowed expressions, metaphoric and metonymic expressions, and univerbised multiword expressions. In the following part of the thesis the author examines the jargon of poker players. He identifies the most significant features of the jargon of poker players, including the large number of terminology taken from the English language, a great deal of expressiveness. From the pragmatic and functional perspective, the jargon used by poker players has two main functions which depend on the context of its use The thesis also includes an explanatory glossary of the jargon of poker players with morphological data and examples of use.
