Abstract

Secondary abstract: The diploma thesis titled The Literary Work of Breda Smolnikar presents short stories and novels written by a writer who only became known to the wider public after being brought to court due to what she had written. The analysis of her prose works includes the following: Balada o divjem mleku (1980), Ko je umiral Stob (1982), Mrtvi Stob (1983), Stobovske balade (1985), Ko se tam gori olistajo breze (1998), Zlate dépuške pripovedke(1999), Stobovske elegije (2002), Spuščena zanka (2003), Ko se tam gori ne olistajo breze (2004), Najbolj zlata dépuška pripovedka o ihanski ruralki (2004), Kkko ssse tttam gggori ooolistajo bbbreze (2006), and Škila (ena od zaltih dépuških pripovedk) (2006). The analysis falls into two parts, content analysis and analysis of structure. The writer gathers material for her works, be it short stories or novels, mainly from her youthful experiences. The themes and motifs she employs are primarily concerned with the fates of ordinary people, living in suburban, rural environments in times of crisis before, during and after the war. The characters are ordinary people, shown in their daily struggles, who each have their own way of looking at life and politics. Confusion and uncertainty seep from the political arena into their inner worlds and encumber their comprehension of reality. All they have left is faith, which keeps their hopes for better times alive. The thesis also concerns itself with the problematic relationship between reality and literary fiction, which is a mainstay of various studies and analyses, and always leads to the conclusion that the reader cannot equate a work of literature with the real world.
