diplomsko delo univerzitetnega študijskega programa Varstvoslovje
Abstract

Position of female prison officers in prisons |
Secondary abstract: |
The work of prison officers comprises various tasks. Prison officers are primarily responsible for supervising prisoners, maintaining law and order and discipline in the prison environment, as well as gathering information, conducting personal checks and providing support to prisoners. The prison officers’ work thus sometimes includes a series of ambiguous and contradictory tasks. In the past, there was occupational segregation, especially for women who chose to enter male-dominated fields. The first employment of women as prison officers appeared in German concentration camps during World War II. Prison officers use a wide variety of strategies to perform their work in prison and cope with the difficult work environment. In the diploma thesis, based on the literature review, we analyzed the position of prison officers in prisons and their tasks, as well as their relationships with prisoners and colleagues. We presented the positive influence that female prison officers have on prisoners, and according to our analysis, we also presented which qualities make prisoners "more lenient" towards female prison officers. Findings showed that prisoners respond positively to women's security style, and refrain from using vulgar language and take control of problematic prisoners within the system to help female prison officers manage prisoners. In the second part of the thesis, we present the situation of female prison workers in the Slovenian prison system. We focused on the employment ratio of female prison officers compared to male prison officers. The analysis of statistical data showed that the number of employed female prison officers has increased, but is still lower compared to the number of male prison officers. |
