Abstract

Secondary title: Role of the nurse in the treatment of bulimia nervosa in adolescents
Secondary abstract: Introduction: Eating disorders are serious mental disorders that typically develop in adolescents. One of the eating disorders is bulimia nervosa, which most commonly begins in adolescence or early adulthood. It occurs more frequently in women, with a lifetime risk of developing bulimia nervosa being 8%. The most successful treatment for adolescents with bulimia nervosa is through specialized treatment programs. Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to explore the field of bulimia nervosa among adolescents and define the role of the nurse in the treatment process. Methods: A descriptive research method was used in this thesis. A review of professional and scientific literature was conducted using databases such as CINAHL, PubMed, the Trip database, and ScienceDirect. The literature search was conducted between November 2022 and March 2023. Literature from 2008 onwards was included. Results: The quality of healthcare is greatly influenced by the nurse-patient relationship. The nurse plays a crucial role in building a therapeutic relationship, which is an essential part of treatment. Despite this, nurses constitute the foundation of treatment, particularly through the therapeutic relationship they establish with patients. Such a relationship impacts the patient's well-being and allows for an individualized approach. Positive and negative emotions related to certain aspects of the illness emerge. Working with the patient thus occurs gradually, involving progressive individualization and empathy leading to recovery. Communication between the nurse and patient is crucial in all areas: rehabilitation, education, treatment, and health promotion. This communication begins from the first contact and continues until the end of the therapeutic relationship. Discussion and Conclusion: Empathy in the therapeutic relationship is closely connected to treatment outcomes. It is meant to facilitate the development of interpersonal relationships and trust. In healthcare, empathy has become a requirement for delivering high-quality healthcare and establishing a strong therapeutic relationship between the patient and the nurse.
